Portfolio Manager update

January 22nd, 2009 · No Comments · General Info, Project Work

So in-between my hunts for a job, I’ve been continuing my development on the portfolio management system (PMS, as I’ve come to lovingly call it). So far, I’ve gotten the installation and login squared away. The admin page has been written and I’m currently working on the page for adding new projects. Has the admin page been tested? No. I have no idea whether it works yet. Once I’ve got all the admin-side pages done, I can test them and debug them. Really, all they will be doing is populating a MySQL database and managing its contents. The client-side hasn’t even been started yet beyond the theoretical plotting.

In short, I’m a little whiles off before I hit a fully functional Alpha release. Once I get that done, I’ll post it up for people to test at their own discretion. Just a fair warning about the Alpha: I haven’t styled the UI at all. You’ll be staring at virgin HTML* for the most part.

Man, this is some hard work. As I’ve never developed an “application” before, this is turning out to be a Hell of a learning experience. I have developed the beginnings of a game in Flash**, so that’s technically an application, even if it is only a higher level one.

On a somewhat unrelated, but related note, you’re probably wondering about all the asterikses. Well, you can blame years of reading Terry Pratchett on that. I’ve simply found it easier to write the information and then hyperlink related content to a footnote at the bottom of the post. Shortens the initial read but allows for the reader to gain access to additional information at their own discretion***.

* This HTML has not been corrupted by the likes of CSS. It is untouched and pure… for now.
** This was my first attempt at a Senior Project. Oh “Catalysor”, I shall finish you someday. In the meantime, I have a mountain of personal projects to finish.
*** I like that word, “discretion”. It makes me sound smart and sophisticated. I could say it all day. Discretion discretion discretion. I used to do a word of the month thing back in high school. It was all fine and well until I got stuck on “bludgeon” for the rest of the year. Something very appealing about the word: the fact that such a violent action is described by a word with such a graceful ring to it. I blame the French for that. Way to create a language that, even when you are cussing, you sound cool and sophisticated.
